Most of our books on spiritualism, ghosts and the occult are categorised in unexplained. Some books may also be listed under New Age.
Aucott and Thomas’s interest in spiritualism, ghosts and the occult was initiated by our purchase in 2009 of the library of the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena.
This included books, magazines and pamphlets ranging from the Victorian period through the First World War to the present day.
Spiritualism came to prominence during the First World War when so many families wanted to contact their recently deceased sons. Writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle promoted it through their own interest.
Ghosts and the occult feature in the fiction sections too with Ghost stories by M. R. James and Sheridan Le Fanu proving continuously popular.
